REBECCA

Rebecca is a 1940 American romantic psychological thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It was Hitchcock’s first American project. The film is  based on the 1938 novel by Daphne du Maurier.

The film stars (в главных ролях) Laurence Olivier as the brooding (задумчивый, угрюмый), aristocratic widower (вдовец) Maxim de Winter and Joan Fontaine as the young woman who becomes his second wife. The film is a gothic (готический) tale (рассказ) shot (снятый) in black-and-white. Maxim de Winter’s first wife Rebecca, who died before the events (события) of the film, is never seen (её не видно). Her reputation and recollections (воспоминания)of her, however (однако), are a constant (постоянное) presence (присутствие) in the lives of Maxim, his new wife and the housekeeper (домработница)  Mrs. Danvers.

The film won the Academy Award (Оскар)  for Best Picture  (лучший фильм) of 1940 and it is the only film directed by Hitchcock to win that prestigious (престижный) accolade (похвала, одобрение).

PLOT (сюжет)

An inexperienced (неопытный) young woman (Joan Fontaine) meets aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) at the French Riviera and soon becomes the second Mrs. de Winter.

Maxim takes his new bride (невеста) back to Manderley, his grand mansion (поместье) by the sea in south-western England, dominated (управляемый, доминируемый) by its housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, a chilly (сухой, холодный, чопорный, бросающий в дрожь) individual (человек) who had been a close confidante (близкий друг) of the first Mrs. De Winter—Rebecca—with whom she is clearly still obsessed (одержима, зациклена). She has even preserved (сохранила) Rebecca’s grand (грандиозный, великий, большой) bedroom suite (спальный гарнитур (мебели)) unchanged.

Eventually (в конце концов), her constant reminders (напоминания) of Rebecca’s glamour and sophistication (изощренность, утонченность) convince (убеждают) the new Mrs. de Winter that Maxim is still in love with his first wife, which could explain his irrational (неразумный, нелогичный) outbursts of anger (взрывы гнева). She tries to please (угодить)  her husband by holding (организовать) a costume party like he and Rebecca used to (раньше). Danvers advises (советует) her to copy the dress that one of Maxim’s ancestors (предки) is seen wearing in a portrait. Nevertheless (тем не менее, однако, несмотря на это), when she appears in the costume, Maxim is appalled (потрясён/в ужасе)  since (так как) Rebecca had worn (одевала/носила) an identical dress at her last ball (балл), just before her death.

Mrs. de Winter confronts (сталкиваться лицом к лицу, спрашивать) Danvers about this but Danvers tells her she can never take Rebecca’s place and almost persuades (убеждает) her to jump to her death. At that moment, however the alarm (тревога, сигнал тревоги) is raised (поднимается) because a sunken (затонувший)  boat has been found with Rebecca’s body in it.

Maxim now confesses (признаётся) to his new wife that his first marriage had been a sham (притворство, подделка, обман) from the start when Rebecca had declared (заявила) that she had no intention (нет намерений)  of keeping to her vows  (сдерживать её клятвы) but would just pretend (будет притворяться) to be the perfect wife and hostess (хозяйка дома) for the sake of (ради) appearances (внешности/вида). When she said she was pregnant (беремена) by another man, she taunted  (дразнила/насмехалась) Maxim that the estate (поместье) might pass to (может перейти)  someone other than Maxim’s line. During a heated argument (во время ожесточённого спора) , she fell, struck (ударилась) her head and died. To conceal (чтобы спрятать) the truth, Maxim took the body out in a boat, which he then scuttled (затопил) and identified (опознал) another body as Rebecca’s.

The sudden crisis causes (заставляет) the second Mrs. de Winter to shed  (отбросить) her naïve ways as they both plan how to prove (доказать)  Maxim’s innocence (невиновность). When the police claim (утверждают)  the possibility (возможность) of suicide, Rebecca’s lover Jack Favell attempts (пытается) to blackmail (шантажировать) Maxim by threatening (угрожая) to reveal (расскрыть) that she had never been suicidal (склонна к суициду). When Maxim goes to the police, they suspect (подозревают) him of murder (в убийстве). However, further (дальше) investigation  (расследование) reveals (расскрывает/обнаруживает)  that she was not pregnant but terminally ill (смертельно больна) due to cancer (из-за рака), so the suicide verdict stands. Maxim realizes (понимает) that Rebecca had been trying (пыталась)  to goad (побуждать; стимулировать; подстрекат) him into killing her via indirect suicide (через косвенное самоубийство), so that  (так чтобы) Maxim would be ruined.

A free man, Maxim returns home to see Manderley on fire, set ablaze (были подожжен) by the deranged (сумасшедший, ненормальный, душевнобольной) Mrs. Danvers. All escape (сбегают) except (кроме) Danvers, when the ceiling (потолок) collapses (разрушается) on her. The film ends with an R-monogrammed nightdress-case (ночная рубашка-чехол) consumed by flames (поглощенный пламенем).
